Pan-American Square Apartments

Organization Name: SWBR

Project Title: Pan-American Square Apartments

Project Location: Buffalo, NY

Project Description:
Pan-American Square Apartments is a transformative affordable and supportive housing community in Buffalo, NY, providing 150 energy-efficient homes for seniors, individuals experiencing homelessness or mental illness, and low-income households. Designed to achieve Passive House certification, the project reduces energy use by up to 75% compared to a typical project, setting a new benchmark for sustainable, affordable living. The design integrates support services with amenities that promote health, dignity, and connection. Residents have access to apartments with enhanced accessibility, community spaces, shared dining area, and transportation assistance that promotes independence. Gardens, walking paths, and outdoor gathering spaces connect the site to the neighborhood, fostering community and well-being. The lobby mural honors the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, connecting the project to the city’s history. The team overcame major electrical challenges through collaboration and exploration, demonstrating creativity and commitment. More than housing, it is a catalyst for community revitalization, delivering stability, sustainability, and hope for an underserved population.

Community Impact:
Pan-American Square Apartments transforms a long-abandoned rail corridor in Buffalo into an inclusive, sustainable community offering dignity, stability, and opportunity to an underserved population. Developed by DePaul, whose mission is to provide quality housing for communities in need, the 150-unit complex offers affordable and supportive homes for adults living with mental illness, individuals experiencing homelessness, and low-income households. “The completion of Pan-American Square Apartments is an important milestone in improving the quality of life for families, seniors, and the most vulnerable Western New Yorkers,” said Congressman Tim Kennedy.

Designed to meet residents’ needs, the community includes furnished units, wall-mounted TVs, a commercial kitchen providing daily meals, on-site services, and 24/7 staffing to foster resilience and independence. Built to PHIUS+ 2018 Passive House Source Zero standards, the all-electric complex reduces energy use by up to 75% while supporting New York’s climate goals. Reclaiming a disused rail corridor as a place of renewal, Pan-American Square sets a new standard for affordable housing that uplifts lives and strengthens the Buffalo community.
