Climate House 1

Organization Name: a.m.Benzing architects pllc

Project Title: Climate House 1

Project Location: 64 President Street, Freeport NY 11520

Project Goals:
This building features an innovative resilient design that can withstand extreme weather conditions. It demonstrates how to build a resilient home in a flood zone. This prototype Low Energy Building was designed to be built utilizing the Passive House concept and allows occupants to remain sheltered at home during a power outage or energy shortage.

Project Description:
The design incorporates an advanced double wood frame wall system allowing for thermal bridge free construction, integration of an airtight layer and super insulation. The design is based on an advanced 24-inch grid framing system which makes the building cost effective and reduces construction waste. The insulation system uses a commercial grade mineral wool insulation for the exterior framed wall and recycled cellulose insulation for the interior framed wall allowing for a building construction with minimal environmental impact and low embedded energy construc- tion. A high-efficient heat recovery ventilation system, in combination with a variable refrigerant flow HVAC technology provides exceptional comfort and filtered fresh air with minimal energy usage to the home owner. The home also features a super-efficient domestic hot water system that uses manifold plumbing resulting in low energy and water usage.

Community Impact:
The new structure is situated in a neighborhood that was impacted by Superstorm Sandy. The Department of Buildings is closely following
the construction to understand how a durable home can be built. This prototype will be educational for the neighborhood demonstrating
the features of a super-efficient building and its advantages of cost effectiveness, enhanced thermal comfort, outstanding indoor air quality and independence from energy cost increases or energy shortage.
