Bruckner Boulevard Apartments

Organization Name: Community Access, Inc.

Project Title: Bruckner Boulevard Apartments

Project Location: Bronx, NY

Project Description:
Community Access believes that people are experts in their own lives. The design of our latest supportive, affordable housing facility – at 985 Bruckner Blvd., in the Bronx – follows this principle. It provides tenants with the keys to building healthy, happy lives, and offers amenities that nurture community. The building, which opened in May 2020, is a ten-story, 215-unit mixed tenancy development (133 studios, 17 one-bedrooms, and 65 two-bedrooms) for low-income families, individuals living with mental health concerns, and families with children coming out of shelters. At 175,000 sq. ft., it’s an $87.1 million investment in the neighborhood. We put a lot of care into making this a welcoming place; the building features multi-purpose community rooms, double-height lounges, a commercial kitchen, an indoor gym and outdoor exercise equipment, a laundry room, a library/computer room, 8,000 sq. ft. of green space with raised growing areas, a playground, and a basketball court. For the past 18 months as this eye-catching building has been in construction, New Yorkers have noticed that something truly beautiful was in the works. Now, Bruckner Boulevard Apartments is a proud centerpiece of Hunts Point.

Community Impact:
Any time someone moves out of the shelter system and into permanent housing is a personal victory. The devastating spread of COVID-19 made the opening of Bruckner Boulevard even more critical. In May 2020, at the height of NYC’s lockdown, Community Access started moving individuals and families out of shelters and into homes of their own. As a result, this building continues to have a far-reaching impact on its neighborhood and on the city as a whole.

With the support of service coordinators on-site, previously vulnerable New Yorkers can now pursue their personal, educational, and professional goals – while full-time family and youth advocates also help connect tenants with after-school programs, health care, education resources, childcare, and other youth supports. At Community Access, we’ve long understood that housing is health care. Especially now, we see how true that is. The tenants at Bruckner not only have beautiful new homes where they can start the next chapter of their lives, they also have a new sense of safety, and a caring community to support and sustain them through this public health crisis.
