Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (D-NY7) introduced legislation (HR 4546) last week that would provide $70 billion in funding to address the growing gap between annual federal public housing capital funding and nation’s capital needs backlog. $32 billion of that funding would go to NYCHA. If this bill is enacted, the funding would improve the lives of not only NYCHA residents but also public housing households across the nation. At Wednesday’s press conference announcing the introduction of this new legislation, NYHC stood alongside Rep. Velazquez, Rep. Nadler, Rep. Carolyn Maloney and Rep. Espaillat, various city and state officials and public housing advocates. Rachel Fee stated this funding is critical as “public housing residents, like all other renters in NY and across the country, deserve safe and decent housing.”
