Organization Name: IMC Architecture DPC
Project Title: The Carroll
Project Location: Carroll Gardens, New York
Project Description:
33 4th Street is an eight-story multifamily rental building in the newly rezoned Gowanus, comprising 82 thoughtfully crafted units. The design draws inspiration from Brooklyn’s industrial legacy, referencing iconic brick factories and warehouses through materiality and form. A faceted terracotta rainscreen system, brick veneer, green canopy, and articulated shadow boxes create a façade of depth, rhythm, and texture, while the terracotta imbues the building with artistry and timeless character. Clean lines, precise detailing, and robust materials balance modern refinement with contextual resonance. Landscaped rear yard amenities and multiple roof terraces extend living spaces outdoors, fostering connection and comfort within the urban fabric. The project exemplifies a considered, contemporary response to place, merging functional excellence with a distinctive architectural presence that elevates the evolving Gowanus streetscape.
Community Impact:
A significant portion of the building—25% of its units—is designated as affordable housing, reflecting a deliberate effort to build a neighborhood that is welcoming to residents of all income levels. By weaving these units seamlessly into the development, the project encourages a diverse community where people from varied backgrounds can live side by side. This commitment goes beyond providing housing; it strengthens the social fabric, supports economic opportunity, and fosters a sense of belonging. Through inclusive design and thoughtful planning, the building contributes to a resilient, balanced, and thriving neighborhood where all residents can enjoy access to quality housing and shared amenities. Landscaped rear yards and roof terraces provide residents with inviting green spaces for recreation, relaxation, and social connection. The building’s green canopy enriches the pedestrian experience, softening the streetscape and contributing to a more human-scaled environment. By weaving greenery into the architecture, the project fosters wellness, sustainability, and a renewed connection between people and place—helping shape a more resilient and
vibrant Gowanus community.
