The Bryant

Organization Name: New Destiny Housing with MAP

Project Title: The Bryant

Project Location: 1115 East 165th Street, Longwood, Bronx

Project Description:
The Bryant, a 62-unit residence in the Bronx will provide housing and supportive services for families. The building is the second collaboration with nonprofit developer and service provider New Destiny Housing and Magnusson Architecture and Planning. The site is on a prominent corner and the design balances security, discretion, active design and healthy living. While giving access to the outdoors, the building also provides a secure environment for families leaving challenging environments. Generous windows throughout and especially at the building’s corner, at street level and in the two staircases provide daylight within corridors, apartments and shared spaces. Green roofs are located at each set back and a large rear yard offers year-round private outdoor access. Metal mesh details at the ground level diffused visibility, and at the windows function as sunshades while hiding HVAC units. A common room, 4 service offices, a meeting room and children’s activity room occupy the ground floor, while a library, laundry and lounge face the green roof at the 8th floor. The project will meet Enterprise Green Community and Energy Star standards.

Community Impact:
The Bryant supports New Destiny Housing’s mission to connect vulnerable families and individuals with safe, permanent housing and services. It will provide high-quality affordable rental apartments for previously homeless survivors of domestic violence and very low- income individuals and families. Typically, domestic violence survivors leaving the emergency and transitional shelter systems in NYC are suffering from trauma. The services provided on-site at The Bryant will help survivors and their children heal from the trauma of homelessness and domestic violence. Without support, low-income and previously homeless survivors often find themselves caught in a continuing cycle of homelessness and violence. Safe, permanent, affordable housing provides the platform they need to remain stable, violence-free and begin to build new futures.

The building provides ample space to provide services, hold meetings, and engage residents. Site improvements including a landscaped rear yard and a visible green roof will provide residents with access to fresh air and social engagement opportunities. An important community amenity is the renovation of an existing NYCHA basketball court that will be open to the public.

Organization Description:
New Destiny Housing Corporation promotes the long-term safety and stability of low-income families and individuals at risk of domestic violence and homelessness. Our work focuses on breaking the cycle of violence by developing and operating service-enriched, affordable housing; offering programs to help domestic violence survivors find and retain permanent housing; and advocating for more housing resources for low-income homeless families. Over 24 years, we have developed 15 buildings that house over 400 families.
