The Atrium at Sumner

Organization Name: Sumner Senior Partners LLC

Project Title: The Atrium at Sumner

Project Location: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

Project Description:
The Atrium, designed by the world-renowned architecture firm Studio Libeskind, is a new 100% affordable senior housing building that will be built on vacant land on the NYCHA Sumner Houses campus. Located on an approximately 24,200 sf lot, the project will generate more than 131,000 sf of new residential space and 7,000 sf of community facility space. The 10-story building will provide approximately 190 units, with 30% of the units designated for formerly homeless residents. The building will include an indoor garden and an atrium in the center, as well as a multi-use performing arts space on the ground floor. The Atrium’s community center will be operated by RiseBoro Community Partnership, Inc., and will host intergenerational educational and arts classes and programming to meet the needs of seniors as they age-in-place. Selfhelp Community Services, Inc. will provide on-site social services to residents, on an as needed, as requested basis, as well as resident-specific programming. The project is part of the NYCHA NextGen initiative that will unlock the potential of existing NYCHA land to build much needed affordable housing and generate new revenue to renovate the existing NYCHA buildings.

Community Impact:
The Atrium is an innovative approach to the development of affordable senior housing. The building has been designed and programmed to meet the needs of the rapidly aging population of New York City, with culturally competent programming for the neighboring Sumner Houses and Bedford-Stuyvesant community. Designed to cultivate community, independence and dignity, the building’s enclosed courtyard creates a year-round green space for the residents. The integration of services and community-based programming within the building allows residents freedom, flexibility and security in their home, while also meeting targeted needs of the larger community by providing intergenerational programming and other educational and recreational uses. The overall goal is to serve the Atrium’s residents and the broader Sumner community by creating homes and shared community spaces that give a sense of civic pride.
