Northside Homeownership Program

Organization Name: Hudson River Housing

Project Title: Northside Homeownership Program

Project Location: Poughkeepsie

Project Description:
The Northside Homeownership Program is the construction of new, two-family homes in the 5th Ward of the City of Poughkeepsie. A largely residential area, the 5th Ward has a diverse community, walkable streets, and is close to many community amenities, including parks and downtown businesses. Hudson River Housing has purchased three vacant properties in the 5th Ward, transforming them into quality, affordable housing for neighborhood residents. The three bedroom, energy-efficient homes in the Northside Homeownership Program will be sold to first-time homebuyers at below-market prices. Coupled with our nationally-recognized homebuyer education programs that offer individualized counseling, credit assistance, and financial incentives, the program provides an exciting new opportunity for residents to build long-term stability and community wealth through homeownership.

Community Impact:
The success of all neighborhoods benefits the city as a whole. Our goal is to build stronger, more vibrant communities through affordable housing and community building. The Northside Homeownership Program is an example of one way we are working to advance our commitment to fostering community wealth, stabilizing neighborhoods, and ensuring long-term housing affordability in the City of Poughkeepsie. We want to increase the homeownership rate, decrease the number of vacant, abandoned properties, and avoid displacement of residents by providing accessible affordable housing opportunities. Poughkeepsie’s Northside has a deep-rooted sense of community and strong social bonds. The Northside Homeownership Program will support the neighborhood as it continues to grow and thrive, and create new opportunities for residents to call Poughkeepsie home. As stated by one recent homebuyer, “The homeownership classes were great – they show you step by step. Now I have my beautiful house. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful, it’s my own.”
