Innovations in Supportive Housing

Organization Name: Corporation for Supportive Housing

Project Title: Innovations in Supportive Housing

Project Location: Brooklyn

Project Description:
CSH is a national non-profit and CDFI that supports the design and implementation of supportive housing solutions as a way to address homelessness. Our work has led to the creation of tens of thousands of supportive housing units. The two projects featured here, Camba Gardens (738 Albany Ave, Bk, NY), run by CAMBA; and Navy Green (40 Vanderbilt Ave, Bk, NY) run by Brooklyn Community Housing and Services, are two beautiful examples of innovative housing funded by CSH.

Community Impact:
Camba Gardens 1 (CG1) is an award winning, national model for co-locating housing and healthcare services, built on under-utilized land owned by Kings County hospital system. This site includes 209 affordable housing units, about 115 of them being supportive housing. The site includes beautiful community gardens, a teaching kitchen, community space, and laundry- to meet the physical and social/community needs of its residents. CG1 had a great economic impact on the larger community as well, with $19 million in contracts awarded to local Brooklyn businesses and the creation of 49 permanent jobs.
Navy Green is built on land that once housed an old jail use by US Navy. It is now a beautiful mixed-use site with market rate, affordable and supportive housing. Navy Green provides safe, affordable housing for formerly homeless men and women as well as low-income workers in the community. With onsite mental health services, nursing care, substance abuse support and vocational training, the residents here can not only find a permanent home, but a place to grow. Navy Green was a finalist for CSH's Eastern Region Project of the year in 2013.

Organization Description:
Our mission at CSH is to advance solutions that use housing as a platform for services to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people, maximize public resources and build healthy communities. We do this through four main lines of business: lending, policy and advocacy work, training, and programmatic support. Our lending team has helped create over 300,000 units of supportive housing nationally. In NYC, we serve as members of the Continuum of Care's Steering Committee and as co-chairs of the coordinated entry (CAPS) committee.

Team Members:

CAMBA and Brooklyn Community Housing and Services have been long term partners of CSH, elevating needs and solutions for NYC's most in need. BCHS' executive director sits on our NY Advisory board.
