Covenant House New York

Organization Name: FXCollaborative

Project Title: Covenant House New York

Project Location: Midtown West, Manhattan, New York

Project Description:
Covenant House New York’s new purpose-built facility will support the not-for-profit’s mission of providing homeless youth with shelter and opportunities to work toward stable, successful lives. Covenant House sought to strengthen their services and impact to the community by partnering with Gotham Organization. In a complex real estate and construction deal, CHNY will remain on a portion of their underbuilt site in a new, consolidated facility that meets current and future needs, while Gotham receives a site for residential development. FXCollaborative is providing planning, architectural, and interior design services for the new 80,000 SF, 11-story facility, of which nearly 60% is devoted to community, educational, recreational, and support spaces. The building balances the dualities of Covenant House’s core mission: be open and welcoming yet safe and secure; celebrate community and never forget the individual; stand out yet blend in; and serve a specific purpose yet be flexible enough to change. Its exterior is expressed with brick, metal, and glass, while interior wood and fabric elements create a place of comfort where youth can feel at ease and begin their journey to being the best they can be.

Community Impact:
4.2 million young people experience homelessness each year. Covenant House New York’s new consolidated facility will help address this issue and both broaden the range of aid and services that can be provided, as well as increase its capacity to help even more at-risk youth. As the pandemic continues, Covenant House New York’s doors remain open 24/7 to protect the most vulnerable youth. The facility acts as a home to the youth who have nowhere else to go during this crisis, and the new facility will continue that by putting housing support, shelter, healthcare, educational services, job training, and civil legal services under one roof. The new facility, which will be complete in 2021, was developed in phases to ensure that existing Covenant House residents are not displaced nor lose essential services.

Organization Description:
