Clarkson Estates in Flatbush, Brooklyn, the $237.9 million winning concept for Site L in the Vital Brooklyn Initiative, will provide 328 units of affordable and supportive homes for low-income and formerly homeless populations, youth aging out of foster care, and formerly incarcerated individuals. It will have over 30,000 square feet of community facility and 80 parking spaces. A Passive House and transit-oriented development, it won funding from HCR’s Clean Energy Initiative for a reduced ecological footprint. The 9-story brick and metal panel, contextual building has a double-height lobby with plentiful natural light. Amenities will include free Wi-Fi in units; 24/7 front desk security; several courtyards; extensive landscaping, including landscaped setbacks at the entrances; rooftop terraces with community gardening and an exercise track; a teaching kitchen for nutrition workshops; children’s playroom; computer room; indoor fitness center; laundry on every floor; flexible community rooms; remote-work common areas; bike storage; live-in superintendent; and curated local art. CHV’s amenity-rich housing and high-quality design promote health and wellbeing in a transformative living environment.

Community Impact:
Adjacent to SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Campus, Clarkson Estates co-locates affordable housing, healthcare, and CAMBA’s onsite supportive services to transition vulnerable tenants from survival to stability and success. CAMBA Housing Ventures in partnership with CAMBA will provide services and programming available to all tenants, including tailored case management. The 30,000 square feet Dr. Roy A. Hastick, Sr. Community Hub will be home to an economic development and workforce training center, a health screening center, adult education and financial literacy services, a small business incubator, a violence prevention and mediation center, a youth education and development center, a food pantry, a café, a childcare facility, and a full-court basketball gym for the community. By transforming a former parking lot next to SUNY Downstate Medical Center, the community will enjoy a revitalized block and access to extensive resources.
