Beverly’s Place

Organization Name: Community Counseling & Mediation (CCM)

Project Title: Beverly's Place

Project Location: East New York, Brooklyn

Project Description:
Located at 402 Snediker Avenue in Brooklyn, Beverly’s Place is a new, 72-unit, permanent supportive and low income residence. The building offers an array of housing options from studios up to three bedroom apartments, indoor and outdoor community spaces, and on-site social services. The building was designed to create a sense of ease and well being among residents. A soaring canopy marks the entrance and provides shelter from the elements; a glass curtain wall brings natural light deep into hallways and provides views to the east; floor to ceiling fenestration create airy apartments, offices and elevator lobbies; contemporary, high quality interior materials, finishes and appliances give residence a sense of pride and connection to modern living; and a playful massing and roofline break from the traditional forms of affordable housing blocks. Beverly’s Place provides residents with an outdoor rear yard and playground, a roof level terrace, a community/TV room, a lobby lounge, public toilets, in-building laundry and storage as well as on-site offices for CCM's support services. With solar panels and rain water detention, the building does its share to reduce its environmental impact.

Community Impact:
The diversity of apartment types at Beverly's Place ensures a balanced mix of residents from low-income singles to larger low-income families, in addition to both homeless special needs single adults and families, and persons with mobility, hearing or visual impairments.

The project extends CCM's impact into the East New York community not just through high quality, inclusive housing but by offering residents a comprehensive support system that provides the foundation on which to build long, independent and productive lives through stabilization, mental health and substance abuse treatment, case management, and employment, educational and nutritional services. Beyond housing, the building itself supports CCM's mission by supplying the spaces needed in which to fulfill it, such as a yoga studio with outdoor terrace, a massage therapy room, and a rooftop garden for residents to grow their own vegetables.

By bringing affordable and supportive housing together with vital support services into a building that reflects contemporary life and helps residents establish a sense of well being and self-worth, CCM is establishing a model for effectively combating homelessness.
