Organization Name: Monadnock Development
Project Title: Kingsbrook Estates
Project Location: Brooklyn, NY
Project Description:
Kingsbrook Estates is a 402-unit, 100% affordable, all-electric Passive House development in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. It replaces five outdated buildings on the former Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center campus with mixed-income and supportive homes for families, formerly homeless seniors and veterans. The developers were chosen through New York State's Vital Brooklyn Initiative. This $1.4 billion plan was created to address long-standing gaps in health, the economy and housing in Central Brooklyn. Kingsbrook Estates turns an underused hospital campus into housing and a community wellness space.
Community Impact:
Kingsbrook Estates will transform an underused portion of the former Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center campus in East Flatbush into a major affordable-housing and community-wellness resource. The 402-unit development will provide deeply affordable homes for families across a range of incomes, including 142 supportive apartments for formerly homeless seniors and veterans. Those residents will benefit from approximately $2.5 million annually in on-site services, including case management, counseling, health support, benefits assistance, vocational services and programming designed to promote long-term housing stability and independence.
The project also advances the broader goals of New York State's Vital Brooklyn Initiative by addressing interconnected housing, health and quality-of-life needs in Central Brooklyn. Community amenities include a 34,500-square-foot landscaped courtyard, recreation and gathering spaces, gardens and a greenhouse that will support therapeutic gardening, education and community activities.
Kingsbrook Estates will also deliver lasting environmental benefits by remediating a contaminated brownfield site and replacing dated medical buildings with an all-electric development.
