Cyclone Bagels

Organization Name: Concern Housing

Project Title: Cyclone Bagels

Project Location: 2028 Surf Ave, Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY)

Project Description:
Cyclone Bagels is a dream come true for Concern Housing. A shop that enhances its community and enriches lives, providing training and jobs for veterans. Cyclone Bagels is the first venture of its kind for Concern Housing. The shop is located on the ground floor of Surf Vets Place, a 135-unit residential building for veterans and people in need of affordable housing. Cyclone Bagels provides supportive employment opportunities, offering training in food preparation, health and safety, commercial kitchen, and financial management skills. Priority hiring is given to residents of Surf Vets Place and is part of the broader continuum of care that supportive housing provides to vulnerable New Yorkers.

Community Impact:
Cyclone Bagels is a welcome enhancement to the neighborhood, creating jobs and addressing the need for a fresh, healthy and affordable food option in Coney Island.

Roughly 200,000 veterans live in New York City, according to city data, and 25% of them live in Brooklyn. Veterans are slightly less likely to be employed than the general population, and about 10% of the city’s veterans live below the poverty line.

Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton said, “Cyclone Bagels is a great addition to Coney Island and is a valuable resource that offers formerly homeless veterans with disabilities the job skills they need to live and thrive in their own community.”
